I don’t know whether it’s a lack of gear or situational awareness, but I can’t tell you how many runs ended in phase 2 with the host getting oneshot by a buttstomp. I think the real key to this fight is to have complete awareness of what they’re up to, in terms of location and animation. No fucking idea how to do that without a summon. If you have the misfortune to be caught by this attack, you will take damage from the hammer and from being trampled by Smough himself. Well bastard sword is a regular greatsword and zweihander is an ultra greatsword, so it will hit a lot harder, but be a lot slower.

For fighting these dudes, keep your guard up and constantly rotate around the room, locked onto Ornstein, backing away from them constantly and zmough the shattered columns between you and them. Hiding behind a pillar is the only guaranteed way to avoid damage, but it is possible to evade by rolling to your right several times as he approaches, or rolling directly backwards just as he reaches you with his charge and begins to go into his popup hammer swing.
If he is walking around to get to you, simply strafe until he is once again on the other side relative to you. Attack your opponent mainly after his jump from above or overhead blow and swings. Sometimes in double or even triple sequence one blow after other.

How to remove curse and other states? He uses a charge to surprise a player, thanks to which he can quickly find himself next to you.
Took me like one or two tries. Thankfully, the bolt moves fairly slowly, but it is guided and will connect if you roll too soon. Let them make their move, then attack.
Whatever gives me Ornstein’s armor as reward anyways. Until he throws the bolt, he will track you, so be prepared to dodge. My stubbornness to defeat Ornstein last almost destroyed me, but our parents were right: This can surprise people charging in after what they thought was a single sweep. Just know when you should turn before you hit a wall. This attack is a good opportunity to evade to one side and then deal some damage, due to its slow recovery time.
Remember to drop your guard to recover stamina when you can. Smough will rear back with his giant hammer in both hands and then slam it down in front of him.
Ornstein and Smough advice please? – Dark Souls – Giant Bomb
Single Hammer Sweep Smough will pull his hammer back to one side, and then swing it around to the other side, where it eventually impacts the ground. Quick and agile, Ornstein is opposite of his partner Smough.
The only attack you need to be aware of is his electrified butt slam; when he jumps in the air, roll back twice and you should be fine. Spoiler on where to find the key: Run backwards—with shield ready to block—and wait for Ornstein to attack.

Yup, ditch that shitty drake sword. If you’re not great a dodging yet, then I would suggest going for a more ‘tanky’ build for now. Its a pretty evasion heavy fight. Time to go hit the wiki to see what weapons look good Smough will swing his lightning-charged hammer horizontally in a wide arc in one direction or the other, similar to his regular Hammer Sweep.
It works wonders on anx bosses other than Queelag, but you are past her.
These guys either kill me within seconds of getting into the room, or I use all my estus flasks killing one of them and then the other one wrecks me. At first i used to hate these guys, now they are one of my favorite bosses in general. Hunt for humanity by farming rats in the sewers. Chose either Ornstein or Smaug. Run run run and be patient, only attack when you KNOW it is safe, and not at any other time. I finally did it!
